The vanilla plant is a lianascent orchid that grows in the undergrowth of tropical rainforests. Vanilla, whose name is derived from the Spanish ‘vaina’ (bean), is a more or less aromatic spice, depending on the species. It is the only orchid cultivated for something other than its flower.
