The cotton plant is a shrub of the Malvaceae family that grows on every continent. There are numerous varieties adapted to all climates and cultivation methods. It is grown for its fruits, known as “bolls”, which, when ripe, open up to reveal a small ball of white fibers, the cotton. After harvesting, the fibers are separated from the seeds. The fiber becomes thread, then fabric. The seed provides oil and cake.
