Genera
Aegilops
Cereals of the Aegilops genus are wild plants native to the Fertile Crescent, closely related to wheat and considered ancestors of cultivated cereals. They are characterized by their erect culms and hard or thorny spicules that facilitate seed dispersal, the result of adaptation to arid and difficult environments. This genus comprises some thirty species, some of which are widely studied in genetic research projects focusing on wheat evolution and domestication. Their genetic diversity makes them a reservoir to be explored in order to identify resilience capacities in the face of climate change.
