Rye, a member of the Secale genus, is a hardy bearded cereal well adapted to poor soils and low temperatures. It is characterized by its slender stems and elongated ears. There are several types of rye: winter rye, which withstands low temperatures, and spring rye, grown in milder areas. Mainly used for animal feed and bread-making, it is also used in the manufacture of certain beers and whisky.
