Des Plantes et des Hommes

Visitors to the Florilège portal are well aware of the precious resource that cultivated plant diversity represents. However, it is worth acknowledging that while the term "biodiversity" is commonly used today, the public primarily associates it with the realm of wild flora and fauna. Through the development of the multimedia virtual exhibition "Des Plantes et des hommes... Cultivons la diversité" (Plants and People... Cultivating Diversity), IRD and its partners aim to present to the public some of the many facets of plant diversity cultivated by farmers worldwide.

Ten plants are showcased in the exhibition. Some are well-known, such as rice and wheat, while others are much less familiar, like fonio and yam. For each plant, its origin, distribution range, and research implications are presented. Users will find both basic knowledge and lesser-known facts. The website features extensive illustrations, accompanied by music and video interviews with scientists, particularly collection curators. Visitors to the site will embark on a journey into the world of cultivated plants and can test their knowledge through the provided quizzes.
